Community Grants and Projects

During the 2006-2007 League year, the JLY awarded more than $70,000 to community agencies. The League voted to give $40,000 to the Renaissance Park Project as part of the redevelopment efforts in the Olde Town East area.

Done-In-A-Day projects performed in collaboration with non-profit service agencies have included wrapping holiday gifts for the Unity Cerebral Palsy organization, working with children at shelters, selling daffodils in conjunction with the American Cancer Society and collecting foodstuffs for the local food bank. These activities provide members wither interesting, meaningful ways to get involved in the community.

In addition, we encourage members to work with area agencies to implement ongoing programs that fill an unmet need. For example, the children’s museum of the York County Agricultural and Industrial Museum was started by a League member and has become an integral part of those organizations. Another program started in the community with JLY impetus is the Moms and Mentors program that pairs teen mothers with more experienced moms. This program is now housed and managed by the YWCA. Olivia’s House, a grief and loss center for children and youth, began with JLY support; many members have completed the necessary training and become volunteers there.  The Children’s Advocacy Center provides a single location for abused children to meet with and talk with representatives of various agencies, and it has had support from JLY as well as from individual members.
