Endowment

The JLY’s Endowment Fund was started in February 1988, taking its place with other forward-thinking organizations. Our Endowment Fund grew from to $6,500 over the next 10 years through Honorary and Memorial Gifts. In December 1998, the first AdHoc Endowment Committee was formed to determine the best way to aggressively grow the fund. The first committee was composed of Judy Simpson and Coni Wolf as co-chairs, Nicole Dannehl, Wendy Grentz, Diane Naylor, Brenda Rhinehart, Lynne Roche and Susan Smith as members.  The committee set the goal for $100,000 and started a campaign called “A Star for a Lifetime.”

It did not take long for the Junior League of York to show its support with a lead gift of $25,000. The Endowment Committee made its own pledge, which reflected 100 percent participation, of $34,500. Both contributions totaled $59,500 and almost 60 percent of the goal, which was a very strong start.

In March 1999, the Endowment Fund Committee approached everyone in JLY’s membership for support. After that support was gained, the League went to its corporate friends in the York Community. By May 2000, the campaign reached its goal of $100,000. To celebrate the success of the Endowment Fund, a maple tree was planted at the northwest corner of Market and Beaver Streets.

The League now has its Endowment Fund with the York Foundation. As of June 30, 2005, the ending fund balance was $146,759.  The fund continues to grow and someday could be used to support JLY’s community projects. Just like the tree that was planted in 2000, the League will watch its Endowment Fund grow for many years.
